Bushwhacking season is upon us--celebrate No-Trail-November with Catskill Mountain Wild and Scribner's Lodge!
This event is for advanced hikers who are looking to leave the trails behind and learn the basics of back-country navigation. We will go over map and compass reading and how to navigate the natural land. We will work together to put these skills to use as we find a route to the summit of Rusk Mountain, one of the trail-less peaks needed to join the Catskill Mountain 3500 Club. We will be gaining nearly 1,600 feet in elevation to the forest-covered peak, giving us a tough climb and very limited views. These characteristics are common in Catskill Mountain bushwhacks.
You can never be too prepared for off-trail hiking in the Catskills. Wear durable hiking attire and proper fitting hiking boots or shoes. Dress in layers and be sure to pack extra warm clothing and rain gear. Bushwhacking will often lead us through thick brush, tall grass, stinging nettles and prickers. For this reason, long sleeves and pants are strongly recommended.
Bring enough water for an entire day of exploring, 2 liters is suggested per person. Lunch will be provided by Scribner's Prospect, but it is always a safe idea to pack extra snacks. Expect to be in the woods through the afternoon. An exact time of completion can not be given due to terrain, group size and other variables.
